Visit of Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son to Germany | Policy

Berlin (VNA) – Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son paid an official visit to Germany on September 26-27 at the invitation of his German counterpart Annalena Baerbock.

During the visit, Son held talks with Baerbock, paid courtesy visits to German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Federal Council President Bodo Ramelow, Minister-President of the State of Hesse Boris Rhein, State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Michel Kelner.

During the meetings, Son said Vietnam always cherishes the strategic partnership with Germany. He suggested the two sides expand cooperation to further deepen the content of the bilateral strategic partnership.

The minister thanked the German government and people for providing Vietnam with the COVID-19 vaccine and medical supplies, helping Vietnam quickly contain the pandemic and resume socio-economic activities.

German leaders have described Vietnam as an important partner for Germany in Southeast Asia and Asia-Pacific. They once again thanked the Vietnamese government and people for offering masks to Germany when COVID-19 broke out in 2020.

President Frank-Walter Steinmeier conveyed his greetings to President Nguyen Xuan Phuc and Vietnamese leaders and expressed the wish to visit Vietnam soon.

On economic and trade relations, the Vietnamese minister proposed that the two sides continue to effectively implement the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA). He hopes that the German parliament will soon complete the ratification of the EU-Vietnam investment protection agreement and that the German government will support the early removal of the European Commission’s yellow card warning on Vietnamese aquatic products for export, thus facilitating bilateral trade and investment activities.

The two parties agreed to intensify coordination in new areas such as the response to climate change and renewable energy, seriously and fully contributing to fulfilling the commitments made at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26). ) as well as dealing with global issues.

President Steinmeier and Federal Council President Ramelow said the two sides still hold potential for cooperation in Germany’s strong areas such as science-technology, environmental protection, response to climate change, vocational training, work and cooperation between localities. They also pledged to address bilateral trade challenges.

On regional and global issues of common concern, the hosts and guests agreed that the two countries would continue to work together effectively and offer mutual support in multilateral organizations and forums, including cultivating ASEAN-EU ties.

Regarding the East Sea issue, they shared a position on ensuring peace, stability, security, cooperation and development in the region, settling disputes through peaceful means in accordance international law and the Charter of the United Nations, in particular the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Son wanted Germany to create more conditions for the Vietnamese community to integrate into the host country, thereby contributing to German socio-economic development and Vietnam-Germany relations.

During the visit, the FM had a working session with the Vietnamese Embassy and met with representatives of the Vietnamese community in the European country./.
